British FIlm Trailer - Miss. Wigley

Which trailer conventions are present and what is their effect on the audience?
Trailer convections are the things we expect to see in a trailer. In this case we view the directors past success in movies, which allows him to be recognised in the market. “From the award winning director of ‘Bhaji on the beach and what’d cooking’. These movies are evidence of a good production as they have been awarded in the industry which builds a positive image of the director and it also motivates the audience to go and watch the movie – (pervious fans). The institution that presents this film is called “Helkon SK”. Personally I don’t recognise this institution which suggests that it’s new and its vital for to build an image in the market as it’s used to create an image. Notice that the director doesn’t introduce the characters, the reason being is because the public don’t recognise them as they’re new and fresh in the industry.
How does the trailer use media language (camera, mise-en-scene, editing, sound) to the establish the film's genre
Media language can contribute towards the genre of the film as existing features suggest a meaning. In this case the use of sound is diegetic. Parminder Nagra the protagonist wants to become a football player and her mind is constantly focusing on her skills and the famous footballer player Davis Backham.  During the course of the trailer we hear the sounds from the football presenter during a match. This connotes Parminder’s passion about film as she concentrating on sports while her sister’s wedding.
There are continuous edits between the ball and protagonist as the director wants to show the close relationship between the two. Furthermore it contributes towards the genre of the film as the “hero” is diverted into her sports. This will attract all the football fans to come and watch the film as they can share something in common. While the character plays football there is reference and clips of David Backham while he’s playing- the purpose of this is to show inspiration and ideology.
During the course of this trailer we can see that the protagonist’s parents are against football especially her mum. You can relate the Indian background and traditions into this, as it’s highly unlikely for girls to have these types of interest. However our protagonist goes against this stereotype and offers something to its audience. This will help attract Asian families as the storyline is based upon their culture and how it’s changed after coming to UK

Who is the target audience and how do you know?
Based upon the trailer and characters I would assume that the film is targeting the Asian cultured families who have various options about their children. Rather than focusing on what a traditional parent would want from their child – a doctor’s degree we as an audience view children going against their parents wish and fulfilling their dreams. This would be a difficult thing to accept in traditional families and the director aims to present the effects on children and parents due to these decisions.
How effective do you think the trailer is in promoting the film? Why?
Personally I believe that the trailer is doing a good job of promoting this film however the director has given the storyline away.  This could leave a negative impact on the audience as they may feel not feel the need to go and watch this film as they are aware of what’s been shown.  Alternatively this could be a proven as a loss of the directors and producers as they don’t have people buying tickets from the box office.

Blackpool - Textual Anaylsis (Van der sandan)

Blackpool – Textual Analysis
What techniques does the opening sequence use to appeal to a weekday mainstream audience?
To begin with the terms weekday mainstream explores the daily routine for people of 9-5 and their lifestyle; involving fashion, trends, clothing etc.  The opening sequence uses many techniques to appeal to the main stream audience. One prime example would be the setting. The scene is set in a home, this is where the daily routine begins and ends (when people come back home after a tiring day).  This could reflect the life style of most people in the society as they leave home in the morning for work and come back to where they left from. Another example we could discuss is the representation of men in the opening sequence. Men are seen dominant as everything runs according to them. People can relate this to their personal life as we live in a patriarchal society – the audience believe that the show is targeted towards them as there are similarities in lifestyles however the only difference is that women have a glamorous side to their life which a ordinary women doesn’t.

How does the extract follow the code and convections of an opening sequence?
Code and convections are the things we as an audience expect to see in the film. This extract follows the same patterns any other media source would. For example:
Institution
The institution of this extract is BBC. They are owned by the government which suggests that the aim of these programmes is to entertain, inform and educated the audience.  Overall the appearance of “BBC” helps us recognise the institutions which build the public understanding of different media organisations.
Names
The director of the extract chooses to present names of the characters as they appear on screen. This allows the audience to recognise the actor in role. The purpose to mention names of the producers and directors is to familiarise the audience with pervious success and so on.
Title
The title is used to signify the narrative. In this case the title “Blackpool” informs the audience that this extract is based upon Blackpool. Furthermore it can help attract audience as Blackpool may be close to home for certain people. We would assume that the main target audience is the British.

Theme Tune
The extract has its own theme tune. This will engage the audience to respond to the film as they are constantly being entertained.  The theme tune also helps suggests the genre which can attract people who are interested Elvis Presley. It’s also as a source to remind people an out the film.
What does this text tell us about Media Institutions?
This text is based upon changing the negative views of Blackpool into more positive assumptions. We all are aware that Blackpool is a dangerous area to be in- the public focuses on the negative side of Blackpool. However BBC wants the public to focus on the brighter side which is basically the night life, casinos and wealth. They transform the name of Blackpool into “los Vegas”. The purpose of that is to attract people into the area as well as sending out a positive image of Blackpool. Overall the media institutions are portraying a positive image of society rather than negative. This could also harm individuals to a certain extent as the truth isn’t fully relieved and views are usually biased.

Untouchables Step Scene - Miss Wigley

Untouchables Step Sequence
How is editing used to build suspense in the scene?
Suspension is a dramatic feeling which the audience can sense. This enables them to think about the following scene as the characters keep the narrative covered. During the course of this scene the director uses editing as his main source to build the suspense as the audience begins to focus on a wider range of people rather than the protagonist on its own. This scene shows that the protagonists is waiting for something to take place- at this point the audience is concerned about the next movement of narrative  because they are afraid to see danger.  Suddenly we see a lady struggling to pull up her pram. For some unknown reason the protagonist becomes worried and is confused whether he should help. There are continuous edits between the lady and protagonist which build suspense.  Unexpectedly we see a gun which connotes which death, murder and danger. The audience is tensed and worried about the innocent child and the lady as they’re lives is at risk. The rapid edits build the suspense as the audience is confused about what’s going on, until the firing begins.
How is time expanded through the use of editing as the pram falls down the steps?
This is the most important part of the scene as the child’s coming closer to danger as the pram drops each step. The director shows this scene though slow motion, the purpose of this is to focus the audiences mind on the child as well as noting the surrounding. The continuous firing scares the audience as they are afraid of losing their protagonist which would result a negative ending.  The time expands which gives the audience time to be concerned about their safety, which alternatively builds suspense. The director also includes constant cuts between the protagonist and child which shows the confusion the protagonist id facing- kill the enemies or save the child (uneasy decision to make). Towards the end of the scene there are up to 40shots capturing the pram, this suggests how important the child’s safety and protagonists actions are.

Case Study Newspaper (Media Platforms)

Case Study – News
News is a supplement of information institutions give to the world. The purpose of this is to make the public aware of what’s happening around the world. This institution involves a lot of mediation, which is basically when news in changed, manipulated or exaggerated for the sake of popularity. News is broadcasted On the TV, Radio, Internet and Newspaper.
TV service: The TV industry has expanded enormously over the past years. It’s almost seen as a shock if people don’t have TV’s in their homes- as TV is the main source of entertainment, education and information. In addition companies such as BBC are aware that TV is present in every home. So they use this opportunity to send news to their viewers.
Radio Service: most people listen to the radio for entertainment such as music. Radios are present in homes, cars and they also provide an online service. This suggests that most people are tuned in during the morning, on the way to work and in the evening. In addition institutions supply news during those times as they are aware of the public listening.
Internet Service: internet is popular amongst the teenagers/ young adults- their more comfortable with using technology whereas the elderly people aren’t bothered and prefer watching TV.  Stereotypically teenagers aren’t interested in the news therefore institutions present news online on WebPages to catch their eye via exaggeration which automatically engages the reader.
Newspaper Service: notice the word Newspaper, this suggests that newspapers are originally designed to pass on information and referring back to the year’s internet, radio or TV’s weren’t introduced which suggests Newspaper (Print) was the main source of information. However even though technology has improved and people have access to other sources, people traditionally like reading newspapers. This could be the reason for people to supply news on train stations as they know that the public won’t have anything better to do while they travel.
