Untouchables Step Scene - Miss Wigley

Untouchables Step Sequence
How is editing used to build suspense in the scene?
Suspension is a dramatic feeling which the audience can sense. This enables them to think about the following scene as the characters keep the narrative covered. During the course of this scene the director uses editing as his main source to build the suspense as the audience begins to focus on a wider range of people rather than the protagonist on its own. This scene shows that the protagonists is waiting for something to take place- at this point the audience is concerned about the next movement of narrative  because they are afraid to see danger.  Suddenly we see a lady struggling to pull up her pram. For some unknown reason the protagonist becomes worried and is confused whether he should help. There are continuous edits between the lady and protagonist which build suspense.  Unexpectedly we see a gun which connotes which death, murder and danger. The audience is tensed and worried about the innocent child and the lady as they’re lives is at risk. The rapid edits build the suspense as the audience is confused about what’s going on, until the firing begins.
How is time expanded through the use of editing as the pram falls down the steps?
This is the most important part of the scene as the child’s coming closer to danger as the pram drops each step. The director shows this scene though slow motion, the purpose of this is to focus the audiences mind on the child as well as noting the surrounding. The continuous firing scares the audience as they are afraid of losing their protagonist which would result a negative ending.  The time expands which gives the audience time to be concerned about their safety, which alternatively builds suspense. The director also includes constant cuts between the protagonist and child which shows the confusion the protagonist id facing- kill the enemies or save the child (uneasy decision to make). Towards the end of the scene there are up to 40shots capturing the pram, this suggests how important the child’s safety and protagonists actions are.

  1. WWW - Well done, you have carefully considered the effect of cross cutting on the audience.

EBI - Explain how long takes are used to build suspense at the start of the scene. Also explain how cutting to around 40 different as the pram falls doen the steps expands time.
